An electric guitar is a guitar that needs a speaker box or other kind of amplifier in order to be heard at typical performance levels. Acoustics (or acoustic guitars) do not require an amplifier and are better suited for quieter settings or at home where an amp is not present.Electric guitars are typically powered by a power amplifier, which is a small amplifier with pre-amplification circuitry for the instrument. In general, the amplifier provides the volume needed to be heard by a speaker or headphones. Electric guitar amplifiers typically range from 20 to 250 watts RMS per channel (mono) or 40 to 300 watts per channel (stereo). Some amplifiers can handle much more than this, such as 500–1000 watts per channel (dual mono), but are rare. Most electric guitar amplifiers have two channels, though some models include three or more channels.
